Chore Chart

We have had a chore chart (multiple variances of chore charts) for a while now. It starts out great for a couple weeks. But then the kids get tired of it, I forget to pay them, they don't like the chores they are assigned, I have to nag them to do chores, etc., etc., etc.

I don't remember where I first saw my new approach, but I've seen it a few times online lately. I'm giving the kids control of the chores they do. I used our existing magnet board (that I painstakingly spent hours gridding out!) OK, not hours, but it took a long time. :)

I made up chores and gave them corresponding dollar amounts. I printed them out on magnet sheets, cut them out and stuck them on the laundry room door.

Here's what it looks like...

Emma has already earned 75 cents, Sara 50 cents, and Hope $1.25!! Luke was busy doing a Scout project so he didn't have the opportunity to do any chores.

I think this is going to work so much better. If the kids want to earn money, they determine how much they earn! It's that simple. So much better than nagging them to do chores only to give them a "smiley face" that means nothing to them.

They are in charge of their own destiny! And one thing I noticed tonight. It's going to instill a little friendly competition between the kids. Sara's mouth dropped when she saw Hope earned $1.25 tonight. They are going to be trying to beat each other to do the chores so they can get the money! Win for everyone!

  1. I found your blog through Kelly's Korner. I LOVE this idea! Like you, we have tried several times to implement a chore/responsibility chart and we have not kept up with it! May I ask where you got the magnet sheets? Also, is this weekly or daily? Do you all call them together at the same time and hand out the $$ or do you place it in a jar for them? Would love any and all details you can tell me! I am a blessed mom of 3 and the youngest is only 9 mo. I am amazed that you have FOUR and are able to keep up with the chore chart!! Thanks!! Michelle

    1. Hi Michelle! Sorry it's taken me a couple days to respond. I've had a killer 3 day migraine. :( I'm about to blog about the chore chart again. It's working like a dream! I got the magnet sheets at Walmart in the office aisle. I do it weekly. They get to pick their chores. I'm kinda tweaking it as it progresses. I think I'm going to require them to do at least one chore a day. I'm paying them on Saturday at the end of the week. The $ has been a motivator! Good luck with it!

  2. WOW! I'm so sorry about your awful headache...I pray it is gone!? THANK you so much for writing me back and answering my questions....really appreciate it! I can't wait to read the new blog post! Okay, I wanted to wait till I read the latest post to see if I would have any more questions! I do...do the kids themselves place the magnet on the board after they complete a task? My oldest boy is 6.5 and my middle girl is 3.5. Obviously baby boy (9 mo) can't partake yet..ha!, but I am hoping it should be pretty easy for the kids....esp my 3.5 yr old. My oldest is very motivated by $$, so this should really work for him. Plus they are both so competitive! I am so excited!! Did you make the magnet board or did you buy...if bought, where? I love the neat columns! I will definitely let you know how it goes! I'm so happy it is working out for your family!!
